3 Great Exercises to Keep Your Feet Happy & Healthy

Strengthening and stretching your feet and ankles with appropriate physical therapy exercises is a great way to keep them happy and healthy. By taking proactive steps such as these for your feet you minimize the chances of suffering a wide variety of problems and injuries and these exercises can also be used to treat and prevent deformities including bunions and hammertoes.

3 great foot and ankle exercises to keep your feet happy and healthy include the following:

  1. The raise, point, and curl exercise— From a seated position, put your feet flat on the floor and then rise up on the balls of your feet. Hold this position for ten seconds. Then rise up onto the tips of your toes and hold again for ten seconds. Lastly, lower your feet to the flattened position and then curl your toes inward and hold for ten seconds. Repeat the entire exercise five times with each foot.

  2. Push on and roll a tennis or golf ball underneath your foot—Painful foot cramps and the arch pain of plantar fasciitis can be treated with these procedures: While seated, roll a tennis ball, golf ball, or frozen water bottle underneath your foot for a few minutes. Then stand up to increase the weight on the foot to provide an even deeper effect. Then repeat the procedure five times with each foot.

  3. Toe scrunches and marble pick up—Using your toes to pick up marbles or other small objects is a great way to increase their strength and flexibility. Another great exercise is standing on a towel and scrunching the material back and forth with your toes. These exercises are also great for treating hammertoes and metatarsalgia.
